Featured WV Photographer: Sarah Volpe

Tell us a little about you…

My name is Sarah, I am the owner of Soulful Shots photography. Photography has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I would always borrow my mom’s camera and do “photo shoots” and then edit the photos using websites like picmonkey.com. I have always known that I have a creative personality but didn’t discover that I wanted to do this as a full-time career until I began shooting weddings. Something about capturing a once-in-a lifetime day for a couple brings me a sense of fulfillment like no other.

What type of photography do you do most? And what do you enjoy most and why?

Shooting couples, engagements, and weddings are my favorite, hands down, but I also shoot maternity, seniors, and family sessions.

What is the most challenging part about being a photographer for you?

The most challenging part about being a photographer for me personally has been finding an editing style that I am completely satisfied with. I actually just found it last week after doing photography for years and I can’t even explain how relieving and exciting that feels.

Describe a typical day in the life of you…

A typical day in the life for me is balancing being a single mom to my wonderful 4 year old daughter and staying on top of my business duties. I edit, do house work, cook, play with my daughter, and keep up with my book-keeping. I am still learning and implementing more efficient ways of running my business.

What is your best photography tip?

My best photography tip is to really learn and embrace the business side of it because it is a lot more overwhelming than you would think. Hire an accountant, do your research, and never stop trying to learn more efficient ways of doing things.

What was your scariest moment as a photographer?

My scariest moment as a photographer was when I truly lost my love and desire for it. I completely overbooked myself after losing so much business during the pandemic. I became extremely burned out. I thought I would never enjoy photography again, but I took much needed time off and have eased back into it with a completely different approach. I schedule time for self-care and don’t take on more than I can handle. I am also dedicated to learning more about business and photography every day.

Favorite photographer to follow right now and why?

My favorite photographer to follow is Cassidy Lynne Photography. I had a mentor session with her, and it was life-changing. She is such an awesome person and photographer.

Place you want to shoot on your photography bucket list and why?

The top place to shoot on my bucket list is Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, California. I visited this location a couple years ago and it was the most magical place I’ve ever seen. It also holds a special place in my heart for personal reasons
